Coming Events in British Columbia for parents

In celebration of Mother's Week, the Robson Reading Series presents a night of pregnancy-and-birth stories with celebrated authors Caroline Adderson, Bill Gaston, Dede Crane and Anne Fleming on Thursday, May 14 at 7 p.m.

If you think devoting a full week to celebrating motherhood seems a bit excessive, after hearing some of the essays contained in Great Expectations: Twenty-four True Stories about Childbirth, you may find yourself wondering whether a week is long enough. With unflinching honesty, the authors reveal the poignant, painful, awkward, and often downright comedic experience of bringing a human being into the world.

Through their carefully crafted prose, the authors bring us into the delivery room to share the highs and lows of their experiences of pregnancy and birth. In these stories, Caroline Adderson names her placenta Warren; Dede Crane's friend calls her "a poor bugger" after her fourth child is born; Bill Gaston-Dede's husband-admits he doesn't even remember the birth of that fourth child, even though he caught it; and Anne Fleming shares the experience of dumping the doula who, upon learning that Fleming's partner required a C-section, wanted "to perform a ritual to help the baby withstand the trauma of coming into the world in such a violent, unnatural way."

Whether you are a parent yourself of not, we guarantee this night will make you laugh, cry, and develop a whole new appreciation for your mother.
